A review of our stay at Sand Le Mere Holiday Village
We were lucky enough to win this holiday, following entering a competition in Cosmopolitan Magazine. Although saying that, all aspects of my review are my own and there were no conditions as part of my prize.
The prize was for a 2-bed luxury caravan which could sleep 6 people, with the option to take a dog and a choice of off-peak dates within 2021.
Sand Le Mere kindly allocated us a dog friendly 3-bedroom caravan which sleeps 8 people.
The location of our allocated caravan was Number 8 Fiona’s Way.

The caravan was nice and clean. There was a roll of toilet paper in the bathroom and a bottle of sanitiser in the kitchen (you can get free refills during your stay, but we just used our own).
Bathroom
It was a good-sized bathroom and the shower was a nice size and worked well. There was a shelf in the shower for shower gel etc which was useful and often missing in holiday rentals. There was a mirrored cabinet above the sink and a cabinet below.
Kitchen
The fridge freezer in the kitchen was a good size. Certainly big enough for everything we’d brought, with space to spare.
The kitchen was fully stocked with all the equipment we needed during our stay.
Plug sockets
There could have been more plug sockets, particularly in the living room, as there only seemed to be one spare. Luckily, we brought an extension plug with us.
Double bedroom
The bed was lovely and comfortable and the vanity area was set up nicely. If you read some of my other reviews, you will see that I have a thing about having a mirror, a table, a seat and a plug all in one place! The double bedroom had this, so got brownie points! For anyone who wants to use a hairdryer or put on makeup, it is so helpful!!

Twin bedrooms
The beds are tiny both in width and length. In my opinion these are only suitable for children.

Location of caravan
No 8 Fiona’s Way was away from general foot or car traffic, so the only people about were those in the surrounding caravans, so it was a peaceful location. There was room to park up to 2 vehicles.
Other Information
One of our neighbours had a Tesco delivery, so this is obviously a viable option.
Dogs
If you have the mobility to get to the beach, it is perfect for dogs to have a nice off lead run.
Sadly, Sand Le Mere let down dogs and dog owners on one element, which was so easily solvable and completely unnecessary. I noticed three dog water bowl housing units, one by the Caravan sales building and two at the entrance to the entertainment building. One bowl was missing for the unit, the next bowl was bone dry, the third bowl had GREEN WATER IN IT. Luckily, we always carry clean fresh water and a bowl for our dog.

On site restaurant
We ate at the on-site restaurant once. It felt a bit of a muddle at first. We had the dog with us, but access to the outdoor seating area was all closed off. I asked at reception and they explained that there was an internal one-way system. We had to walk through the inside dining area, then head to the outdoor seating. So that was fine once we knew.
The process was to order and pay for your food at the bar. The food was lush and my husband’s burger was a challenge he succeeded in! The prices were also good. He had The Ultimate Challenge Burger for £13.25 and I had the Cheese and Bacon Burger for £11.35.
The Beach
Although not owned by Sand Le Mere, you have a beach right on the doorstep of the Holiday Park. It was about a 5-minute walk from our caravan.
There are a couple of issues though
- There is evident erosion happening on this part of the coast, the beach wall looks as though it is only made from soil! So, things are likely to continue to change.
- There is no official safe route down to the beach. But there are routes that are relatively simple to navigate if you have no mobility issues. I doubt you would be able to get a pram down unless someone carried it.
That being said it was a lovely peaceful place for a walk and perfect for letting Archie our dog off his lead.
Would we stay at Sand Le Mere again?
Not in a caravan as the bedrooms are too tight and the twin beds are tiny. But we would certainly consider a Lodge, particularly if they offered dog friendly ones in the future.
As well as the lodge offering larger and better equipped accommodation, you also get fenced decking, which with a dog is perfect (if of course they were allowed!). Some of the lodges also have hot tubs 😊
How does Check In work
Currently a few days before your holiday start date a member of the Sand Le Mere team will phone you to do a check in on the phone.
On arrival day you can get access to your caravan from 4pm. They will phone you once your accommodation is ready to inform you which caravan you will be staying in. Then you are able to go straight there (even if it is before 4pm). One of the doors to the accommodation will be sealed with a safety sticker.
On departure day you must have left by 10am.
What accommodation is available at Sand Le Mere?
There is a mixture of standards of caravans, some of which are pet friendly. There are also holiday lodges, plus a touring field.
One thing that took my eye on the touring field was the plots with private use ensuite facilities. If I ever needed a touring plot, I would definitely investigate one of those!
You will also find residential caravans at Sand Le Mere and those that are privately rented out.
What extra items we took with us
A fan
- This was well used both in the living area and in the bedroom.
Garden trellis
- When travelling with our dog, this is something we take with us standard, as we can keep our dog to one area where necessary, particularly if he has muddy paws!
- Also, the caravans at Sand Le Mere don’t have fenced decking, so the trellis was even more useful, as acted like a stair gate on the door.
Outside furniture
- We correctly presumed there would be no chairs to sit outside the caravan with, so took our own.
Extension plugs
- Generally, there are never enough plugs, with all of our phones, computers etc, so this is a staple for us to travel with.
USB charging unit
- This is a new item I have started taking with us on trips, as for my camera and batteries, it takes the pressure off using all of the extension plug slots!
Also needed were towels, tea towels, toilet roll and washing ups equipment. There is a note about this on the website.
What facilities are there at Sand Le Mere Holiday Village
The only facility we used was the restaurant once and the beach (which isn’t owned by Sand Le Mere), so we can’t comment on the facilities. But here is what is available.

🎁If you plan on spending time on the beach, or have a hot tub at your accommodation, a poncho is perfect to keep you warm once you come out of the water. It also allows you to remove your swimwear with privacy! I have the cheaper version, but I have also given you a link for the dearer option, that many sports people use.
